Marketing your clan or guild and gaining more members

Posted on 23 June in Gaming

Making a team, clan or guild is all well and good. But getting people to join is something else entirely. You might have the best ideals, the best plans, and a great vision for the future. But nobody wants to join you.

There are several reasons for this, and several things you really have to do to get people interested.

First and foremost is grabbing players' attention. While this part constitutes more than just a cool name... it never hurts to have a cool name. Maybe something that people who play that specific game will get. Like calling a Horde guild on World Of Warcraft "Thralls Warbringers" or calling a League of Legends team "We hate Teemos". This makes the team feel less generic and more suited to that particular game.  Understandably, some teams stretch across multiple games. In which case it's a good idea to have a short name or tag that is more universal.

In addition to this, you'll want to let people know about your team as soon as you can. If you have a website, you should include a description of the team and what your focuses are on the front page. This should outline the basics of your clan. Stuff like the games you play, how your recruitment works and details on your schedule.

One thing you might want to include, or at least touch on, when describing your team, clan or guild is the thing that makes your clan unique. There are a lot of gaming organizations out there, and many have a uniqueness to them which is the primary reason people want to join. This uniqueness can be something as small as an MMO server (only people on a specific server can join your group), or it could be something as drastic as a style of play. Maybe you only want people who use sniper rifles in a particular shooting game. This example makes the group have a much more focused discussion path. Players can help each other get better in that unique aspect of whatever game/games they're playing.

The last point to consider is word of mouth (or text, depending on which game you're playing). This is perhaps the most important, and the most effective way to market your team, clan or guild. This entails players from your team telling other people who aren't aware about it. This is something you see a lot in "real-life" marketing. But in gaming it works on a much larger scale, since it's so easy to talk to people from all around the world and tell them about the team.
