During the past week, our cloud service provider Linode have come under heavy fire from DDOS attacks, resulting in entire data centre outages. Our uptime for the past 30 days is just 98.97%. These recent outages are the first of it's kind in several years of using Linodes service.
Not so great, considering how many websites we host.
We've had a highly available setup using load balancers and no single point of failure for some time now, however, all of this has been under the same roof and if the datacentre goes offline, we go down with it.
This is why during the last few days (during the holidays, yippee!) we've been putting together a duplicate setup in a separate datacentre. In the event of an outage in one datacentre, we will automatically fail over to the redundant datacentre and keep your websites online.
Our status page now reports the uptime from our two datacentres, one being in London, UK and the other being in New York, US.
DDOS attacks are becoming all too prevalent nowadays and every datacentre has to deal with them. We anticipate that in the event of a global outage, our service (and your website) will still survive.
